English after Arabic..

وانا ماشية السنة الماضية في شوارع برشلونة، في طريقي للفندق شفت هاد الفستان على اللعبة في الڤترينا، وقفت. الفستان كان جديد، بس كان منظره مبين وكانه قطع مسافات من سنوات الخمسينات ليوصل اليوم، مع التنورة الطويلة والمنفوخة، الربطة من قدام، النقاط، القصة، القماش..

دائما بتسائل ايش هو الاشي اللي بجذبني لاوقات مضت، اوقات اللي انا ما عشت فيها ولكن عشت اسمع عنها واشوف صور منها، افلام، موسيقى.. فن، وقصص اشخاص عاشوا فيها. في اشي كتير سحري وغامض في الهروب من الحاضر، متل رحلة في الزمن لعقود وقرون مختلفة وموضات مختلفة

يمكن عشان هيك التاريخ، كمان في عالم الازياء، بيعيد نفسه كل الوقت، ويمكن.. احنا بنتشوق لزمن تاني وبنحاول نخلقه من جديد بانفسنا. في الحالتين، اذا الفستان خلاكي توقفي وتصفني فيه، اعرفي انه يمكن في قصة بحاول يحكيلك اياها…

I was walking the streets of Barcelona last year, making my way back to the hotel, when I saw this dress on the mannequin in H&M store, and I had to stop. It was brand new, but it looked like it made it’s way all the way from the 5o’s, withs its long and flare bottom and tie in the front, the dots, the fabric, and the cut.

I always wonder what is it about the past that always draws me back to times I never even lived in, but lived to hear about and see in pictures and songs and movies.. in art and older people stories. There’s something magical and mysterious about escaping the present, some kind of a time travel in different decades and fashions.

Maybe that’s why history, also in fashion, always repeats itself, and maybe it repeats itself beacause we long to other times and we try to recreate them. Either way, when a dress makes you stop and stare, you know there might be a story it’s trying to tell…
